Witchcraft is my Ancestry. From my Afro-Indigenous Roots to my sacred communities, my spiritual practice has been one that has been hidden from society and from mainstream media since colonization and fear. This false fear is not one that should be mainstream, as Witchcraft is an art involving honoring the natural rhythms of life, self and the unseen. From discovering my power at a young age and embracing it within my family, I want to share my personal connection to the divine with you all. In Witchcraft, we give back to nature to receive from nature.
Focusing on my lineage as a witch, not only in my family, but in my community has really inspired me to take that faith and make this alter. This is my first floor piece that I’ve ever done and my first altar that I ever created out of my own materials and artistic processing, so it was very meaningful and very personal to me. I did connect a lot more with the elements in my room and focusing on sustainability within witchcraft, which includes reusing jars from herbs and salt and spices, upcycling in DIY candles, finding art to represent spells such as the woman body representing femininity, and just textiles that I grew up connecting with whether it’s the yarn on the altar that my mom crocheted my baby blanket out of or colors and materials I used to wear.
I have been not only an example for which is on campus, but also a lot of witches of color in my own spaces and connecting techniques from my Cherokee and Caribbean Roots. I grew up in my Native American culture and learning a lot about spirituality. As I get older, I am connecting even more with the Earth. I’ve always found that connection with nature and taught it with my communities that I am within.
