This fabric scroll that I’ve created started off as a simple piece of brought satin. Filled with ink block printing techniques, personal yarn, nature and hand sewing, I created this piece to speak on my spirituality as an indigenous woman. Braids hold not only symbolic power, but also a meaningful identity in my life. In my culture and growing up, two braids represent the protection of the woman. Throughout this piece I want to highlight sensuality and sexuality within my culture and within womanhood reclaiming this aspect of life as something we used to empower ourselves. Pattern is a woman with spiritual symbols, and also a shell/ vagina representation. The baby blue-colored yarn braided and sewn was used in the creation of my baby blanket, created by my mother , and the cream-colored yarn used was the first I received when I started knitting at age 7. I am excited that my first art scroll has the opportunity to speak for not only my identity but so many who have connected with this art.
